Standards & trust

Automated with care.
Accountable to people.

Positive does not mean uncritical. We seek overlooked progress and creative energy while reporting limitations, uncertainty and the voices of people directly affected.

Our public promise

Technology can widen the frame. It cannot replace consent, context, rights or editorial responsibility.
This framework applies to stories, community submissions, commercial partnerships and automated workflows.

Publication workflow

Six gates before
a story goes live.

01

Source gate

Consequential claims require a primary source and independent corroboration where reasonably available.

02

Rights gate

Images, audio and video need documented ownership, licence or embedding permission. Attribution travels with the asset.

03

Dignity gate

People are presented with agency and context. We reject dehumanising, extractive or stereotype-led framing.

04

Safety gate

Sensitive locations, minors, survivors and at-risk contributors receive heightened review and data minimisation.

05

Commercial gate

Funding and affiliate relationships are disclosed and kept outside editorial scoring.

06

Human review

Automation may research, classify, translate and draft. A human remains accountable for sensitive or high-impact publication.

Copyright & media

Licence before reach.

  • Prefer original embeds, public-domain media and documented open licences.
  • Record creator, source page, licence, location and descriptive alt text.
  • Never use AI-generated imagery as documentary evidence.
  • Remove or correct disputed media while a rights claim is reviewed.

Human rights

Agency before exposure.

  • Assess risks to contributors and affected communities before publication.
  • Apply heightened care to children, displacement, health, conflict and identity.
  • Do not expose precise locations or identities when publication could create harm.
  • Provide a route to correction, complaint and remedy.

Artificial intelligence

What automation may do

Monitor sources, detect duplicates, classify by country and topic, assist translation, draft summaries, check required fields and flag risks.

What automation may not decide alone

What remains human

Publishing sensitive allegations, identifying vulnerable people, accepting sponsors, resolving rights disputes, removing community members or approving fundraising appeals.
